About the building
Pier Pavilion in Barangaroo is a thoughtful and striking blend of sustainability and design. The new civic pavilion is an inviting community hub with a multipurpose event space and seating at Watermans Cove.
Designed by Besley & Spresser, Pier Pavilion references land, sea and sky. Its form mimics the geometry of the harbour’s coves and peninsulas, and a large oculus brings natural light inside. The living rooftop hosts native plants and habitats that enhance biodiversity, and recycled water supports irrigation.
Exemplifying eco-conscious architecture, the pavilion’s facade features ‘oyster terrazzo’ – more than half a million recycled rock oyster shells, otherwise destined for landfill, combined with a variety of recycled aggregates. This first-of-its-kind material specially formulated by Besley & Spresser for the project pays respect to the long history of oyster feasting in the area. More than 91 per cent of the pavilion’s construction waste was recycled, and cross-laminated timber is used for its rooftop deck.
