PHIVE
PHIVE
This imaginative city landmark brings civic and community life together under one soaring red roof
About the building
Located on the lands of the Barramada people of the Dharug Nation, PHIVE brings culture, learning, creativity and civic activity together in one shared place, becoming widely regarded as Parramatta’s living room.
Opened in 2022, PHIVE’s bold design is by Manuelle Gautrand Architecture in partnership with Lacoste+Stevenson Architects, and DesignInc. The building’s sculpturesque roof responds to the surrounding public realm and the movement of the sun, with hundreds of folds opening views to the west and east while drawing light inside. The roof’s vibrant hue, balanced with a spacious interior bathed in natural light, glazed walls and use of colour signal the building as a playful, welcoming space.
PHIVE houses a major public library, makers spaces, performance and event spaces, meeting rooms, customer services, council chambers, a Keeping Place and integrated public art. The library floors are organised with open lounge and study areas facing the public square, like an amphitheatre. The third level is dedicated to community spaces, and the council chambers on the top level of the building cantilever over Parramatta Town Hall. The Dharug Keeping Place is a safe and culturally governed space for Aboriginal cultural materials to be returned to and preserved and shared on Country.
PHIVE is a net zero carbon building, achieving a 6 Star Green Star accreditation that reflects excellence in sustainable architecture and engineering.
